What is the difference between 1080i and 1080p?
High definition format means a screen resolution of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. This means that the resolution of 1080i and 1080p is the same. So, what’s the distinction between the two? Continue reading to find out.
Let’s begin with the abbreviations: 1080p refers to a progressive scan of 1080 pixels, whereas 1080i refers to an interlaced scan of 1080 pixels. The difference is the way these two formats get displayed on your screen. In an interlaced scan, the image is displayed by alternately illuminating odd and even pixel rows. The progressive scans each row of pixels in order, as the name suggests.
The refresh rate is the difference between the two. Interlaced refreshes half of the lines at a time, alternately whereas progressive refreshes all lines at the same time. However, this occurs so frequently every second that you are oblivious to it. However, it can be interpreted as a measure of visual quality.
In principle, a 1080p resolution provides higher picture quality than a 1080i resolution (read on to learn why), but in fact, the ordinary customer cannot notice the difference.
What is 1080i?
In 1080i, the number of horizontal lines on the screen is 1080, and the I stands for interlaced scan. In an interlaced scan, a picture is created by alternating the odd and even rows of pixels.
While the resolution is higher, interlacing can cause flickers and make fast-moving objects appear a little blurred. As a result, networks that broadcast high-definition sports often use 720p, whereas nature stations choose 1080i because of the higher quality.
Televisions use 1080i with a 50 Hz scan rate. However, because televisions are no longer limited to 50 Hz, the interlaced format is no longer widely used.
The most widely used HDTV format is 1080i and adopted as the HDTV broadcast standard by most television broadcast, cable, and satellite sources.
What is 1080p?
In 1080p, the number of horizontal lines on the screen is 1080, and the p stands for progressive scan. All current screens and televisions use the 1080p format. Unlike 1080i, which only refreshes half of the pixels at a time, 1080p refreshes the whole screen at once. As a result, 1080p gives a “true HD” feeling.
The advantages of the progressive scan are especially noticeable in scenarios with a lot of motion. All modern computer screens and televisions, whether LED TVs, UHD 4K TVs, OLED TVs, UHD 8K TVs, and so on, use progressive display.

1080p has many advantages over 1080i due to its operating concept. 1080p offers higher perceived image quality. A 1080i video has a similar image quality to a 720p clip, which means you won’t appreciate Full HD photos.
On smaller TV displays, they appear to be the same. On wide screens, though, the difference is easily discernible. In general, 1080p is superior to 1080i.
When it comes to gaming, we prefer 1080p over 1080i or any other screen resolution as it is by far the best option.
